October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month and a good reminder to stay current with recommended breast cancer screenings. Breast cancer is easier to treat when detected at earlier stages, and women with a family history of breast cancer may need to begin screening sooner.
Breast Cancer Screening Guidelines
For women at average risk, the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force recommends:
- Screening for breast cancer every other year
- Beginning at age 40
- Continuing through age 74
Women are considered at average risk if they do not have a personal or family history of breast cancer, a gene mutation such as BRCA that increases breast cancer risk, or a history of chest radiation therapy before age 30.
Clinical breast exams and self-exams are not substitutes for mammograms.
ACSHIC Benefits
The ACSHIC plan provides coverage for one mammogram per year beginning at age 40, along with a supplemental mammogram for members who are at more than average risk.
Members can review their Benefits Booklet at acshic.com for additional information.
